The Patrol Division of the Sparks Police Department provides uniformed officer response to a wide variety of situations. The Patrol Division is our first responder resource for incidents such as traffic accidents, domestic disturbances, assaults, property crimes, neighborhood disturbances and many other situations. It is often referred to as the backbone of the department. Patrol is very active 24 hours a day, 7 days a week where a critical incident can, and does, occur at any time of the day or night. This creates an environment where our level of operational readiness must be high at all times.

In addition to responding to calls for service, patrol officers complete the investigative function on cases that detectives do not have the resources to pursue. These include many misdemeanor cases that require further investigation such as thefts, assaults, embezzlement and many others.

Patrol officers also staff the Domestic Abuse Response Team or DART. This team conducts follow up interviews with the victims of domestic violence to provide support beyond the initial call for assistance.

Officers made great strides in investigating the top five crimes the department actively monitors with ComStat. These crimes include Robbery, Residential Burglary, Vehicle Burglary, Commercial Burglary and Vehicle Theft. The Patrol Division works with the Crime Suppression Unit to aggressively attack crime and criminal behavior in these top five crimes.

Patrol officers are given the opportunity to participate in many collateral assignments. Officers are selected for collateral assignments based on a competitive process consisting of previous performance and specific knowledge or abilities.

The following is a list of collateral assignments that officers can participate in through the Patrol Division:
