Violent Crimes Section is split into two sections, Major Crimes Unit and Family Violence Unit. This section is staffed with seven detectives and one sergeant. Three detectives are assigned to Major Crimes and four are assigned to Family Violence. They are supervised by one detective sergeant.

    Major Crimes Unit
Detectives assigned to Major Crimes investigate cases that encompass violent crimes against people, to include: Murder, Attempted Murder, Robbery, Assault/Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Sexual Assault with an unknown assailant. These cases often require multiple investigative resources and assistance is provided by detectives from within the division regardless of case assignment.

Our Major Crimes Detectives are committed to partnering with prosecutors from the District Attorney’s Office to achieve successful prosecutions. Our detectives maintain contact with our victims and victim families and assist victims and their families during and after the court process.

    Family Violence Unit
Detectives assigned to Family Violence investigate cases that encompass violent crimes or sexual abuse among family members to include: Domestic Assault/Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Stalking, Child Abuse, Child Sex Crimes, Elder Abuse and Sexual Assault by a Spouse or known assailant.

Our Family Violence Detectives are committed to protecting children and victims of domestic violence. We work closely with Washoe County Social Services, Victim Advocates and other local entities to ensure the safety of our victims.

The Sergeant assigned to supervise the Violent Crimes Section reads and assigns these cases and directs investigations to meet departmental goals.
